BRACE, which was founded in 1987 and celebrates
its 21st anniversary this year, stands for Bristol Research into
Alzheimer’s and Care of the Elderly. Alzheimer’s disease is the most
common form of a group of related illnesses known as dementia, a
condition which causes the sufferer to experience an increasing loss
of memory and feelings of confusion. Family members will notice
changes in personality and mood, amongst other symptoms, and the
sufferer can finally deteriorate into a total physical decline. A
few figures show how big the problem is:
-
One in fifty people aged
65-70 develops a dementia problem.
-
One in five people over 89
develops a dementing illness - usually Alzheimers.
-
There are 750,000 sufferers of
dementia in the UK.
-
There are over 12,000 people
experiencing some form of dementia within a 30 mile radius of
Bristol.
BRACE is one of a few
charities solely dedicated to supporting dementia research and,
although it is generally considered to be a regional charity, the
work it supports and the resultant findings bring benefits to
dementia sufferers throughout the UK and internationally. The
support given to BRACE by our 3000+ active supporters in the South
West and throughout the UK has helped the research teams to make
considerable contributions to the worldwide knowledge of dementia
and its treatment.
